Know Your Airplane

The POH is your airplane's authority

Definition

Everything in Module 3 built your understanding of how airplanes work. But you don't fly airplanes in general — you fly one specific airplane, and its Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) or Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) is the authority on it. Two airplanes of the same model can differ in installed equipment, STCs, and weight and balance, so the numbers and procedures that matter are the ones in your book.

Explanation

Under 14 CFR 91.9 you must operate the airplane in compliance with its AFM, its markings, and its placards — the POH/AFM isn't a study aid, it's the legal source. For airplanes certificated after March 1979 the AFM is required and is specific to the serial number. Your job as pilot in command is to know where your limitations, procedures, and numbers live, and to defer to them over habit or memory.

POH structure: the 9 sections

Definition

Most modern POHs follow the GAMA standardized format — nine sections in the same order in every book. Knowing which section holds what turns a frantic search into a glance: limitations in Section 2, emergency procedures in Section 3, normal procedures in Section 4, performance in Section 5, weight and balance in Section 6.

Explanation

The nine sections are: 1 General, 2 Limitations, 3 Emergency Procedures, 4 Normal Procedures, 5 Performance, 6 Weight & Balance / Equipment List, 7 Systems Descriptions, 8 Handling/Servicing/Maintenance, and 9 Supplements. Section 9 (supplements) is where STCs and optional equipment live — often where your airplane really differs from the generic model. Older, pre-GAMA handbooks may not follow this order, so confirm the layout of your book.

Why it matters

In an abnormal situation you don't have time to leaf through the whole book. Knowing the section map is what lets you find the right procedure in seconds.

Tab your POH's Sections 2, 3, and 4. In the airplane, you want limitations, emergencies, and normal checklists under your thumb, not somewhere in a 200-page book.

Limitations & placards

Definition

Section 2 limitations are operating rules, not suggestions. They cover airspeed limits and the arc markings on the airspeed indicator (Vne, Vno, Va, Vfe, Vs), powerplant limits, weight and CG limits, approved maneuvers, and the kinds-of-operation equipment list. The placards posted in the cockpit are part of this — and under 14 CFR 91.9 they're legally binding.

Explanation

Read the airspeed indicator like a set of rules: the green arc is the normal operating range, the white arc is the flap operating range, the yellow arc is a caution range for smooth air only, and the red line (Vne) is never-exceed. Powerplant markings work the same way. Honor the weight and CG envelope from Sections 2 and 6, and treat every placard as a limitation you're legally required to comply with.

Why it matters

Limitations are where 'I didn't know' becomes an accident or a violation. Reading your markings and honoring your placards is basic airmanship the DPE will probe.
Common error

A common mistake is treating the yellow (caution) arc as just 'fast but fine.' It isn't — the yellow arc is approved for smooth air only. In turbulence, keep the airspeed out of the yellow even though it's below Vne, because a sharp gust up there can overstress the airframe.

Normal, abnormal, emergency

Definition

Procedures come in three flavors. Normal procedures are the checklists you run when everything's working, phase by phase. Abnormal procedures handle something that's not right but not immediately life-threatening — a rough magneto, an alternator light. Emergency procedures handle an immediate threat — an engine fire, an engine failure.

Explanation

Emergency (and some abnormal) checklists separate memory items — the bold-face, immediate-action steps you perform from memory — from read-and-do items you accomplish with the checklist in hand. The discipline is: do the memory items right now to stabilize the situation, then pick up the checklist and confirm you've done them and complete the rest. Know which of your airplane's items are memory items before you ever need them.

Normal

  • Everything working
  • Checklists for each phase of flight
  • Read-and-do, unhurried

Abnormal

  • Not right, but not immediately life-threatening
  • A rough mag, an alternator light
  • Manage it, then decide

Emergency

  • An immediate threat

Why it matters

Confusing an abnormal for an emergency (or fumbling for a checklist when you should be acting from memory) wastes the seconds that matter. Knowing the categories and your memory items is what makes your response fast and correct.

The abnormal mindset

Definition

When something goes wrong, the first job never changes: fly the airplane. Aviate, navigate, communicate — in that order. Only once the airplane is under control and going where you want do you work the problem: recognize what's happening, maintain aircraft control, analyze and identify it, and act (memory items, then the checklist), landing as conditions require.

Explanation

The killer in abnormal situations is fixation — going heads-down to troubleshoot while the airplane quietly descends into terrain, or talking on the radio before flying. Aviate first, always. Then navigate (know where you are and where you're going), then communicate (declare and get help if you need it). The recognize-control-analyze-act loop keeps you from skipping straight to a fix before you understand the problem. When in doubt, fly the airplane and land.

Why it matters

More than any single procedure, this priority is what keeps an abnormal from becoming a fatal accident. 'Fly the airplane first' is the reflex every emergency lesson is built on.
Common error

The classic, deadly error is going heads-down to troubleshoot — or reaching for the radio — while nobody is flying the airplane. A famous airliner crash happened because the whole crew fixated on a burned-out light bulb while the autopilot quietly let the airplane descend into the ground. Fly first, every time.

Safety

Build the habit on every normal flight: when something demands attention, say 'fly the airplane' out loud first. Under real stress you'll fall back on the habit you practiced.

This is your airplane

Definition

You've learned the controls, the engine, the fuel system, the electrical system, and the gear, brakes, cabin, and carbon-monoxide hazard. The capstone is to make all of it specific: stop knowing airplanes in general and start knowing yours. Know your limitations, your emergency memory items, what fails and what you're left with, and where every number lives.

Explanation

Pull the module together in your airplane's terms: your V-speeds and limitations (POH §2), your emergency memory items (§3), and what each failure leaves you with — an alternator failure means minutes on the battery, fuel starvation is different from exhaustion, carbon monoxide means heat off and vents open and land, a dead magneto still leaves you flying. Know where every number lives so you can find it fast. The best pilots are lifelong students of the specific airplane they're flying.

Why it matters

This is the whole point of Module 3: not trivia about airplanes, but fluent knowledge of the one you fly. That fluency is what a checkride — and a real emergency — actually tests.
