After the landing — now you survive

Definition

The airplane is stopped — now the job changes from flying to surviving. In order: secure the airplane (mixture, fuel, mags, and master OFF so it doesn’t catch fire), get everyone out and well clear, account for everyone, treat injuries, and then signal for help. This is where ABCDE’s ‘E’ — get everyone out — continues past touchdown.

Explanation

A survivable landing can still turn deadly in the first minute — a post-crash fire, or a passenger left behind. A calm, ordered sequence prevents both.

Why it matters

The minutes right after a forced landing decide the outcome. Securing the airplane and evacuating before you do anything else is what keeps a survivable landing survivable.
Common error

Reaching for the radio or the ELT before the airplane is shut down and everyone is out.

The ELT — your rescue beacon

Definition

The Emergency Locator Transmitter is what brings help to you. A 406 MHz ELT is monitored by satellites (COSPAS-SARSAT), transmits a registered identity, and — if GPS-equipped — your position, so rescuers get an alert with who and where within minutes. The older 121.5 MHz signal is no longer satellite-monitored, though ATC and overflying aircraft may still hear it. The ELT fires automatically on impact (a g-switch) and can be activated manually; after any hard landing, check that it’s transmitting — or shut off a false activation.

Explanation

406 is the difference between ‘a satellite already knows who and where you are’ and ‘maybe a passing airplane hears a tone.’ Register the 406 beacon so the alert has your details.

Why it matters

The ELT is the single piece of equipment most likely to get you rescued — and a 406 beacon does it in minutes with your identity and position. Knowing it fired (or didn’t) is part of surviving.
Common error

Assuming any ELT gets a fast satellite response — the old 121.5-only units don’t.

Signaling & getting found

Definition

Getting found is layered. Electronic first: the ELT or a personal locator beacon (PLB), then a cell phone — even a weak signal can text out. Then visual: a signal mirror (visible for miles), fire and smoke (three fires means distress), bright clothing or panels, and ground-to-air signals (a large ‘V’ means assistance required, ‘X’ means medical help required). And stay with the airplane unless it’s unsafe — it’s far bigger to spot from the air than a person, and it’s shelter.

Explanation

Search crews are looking for the airplane, not a hiker. Walking away makes you smaller, harder to find, and burns the water and energy you can’t spare.

Survival gear & priorities

Definition

Carry gear matched to the terrain and season you fly over — the essentials cover water, signaling, first aid, fire, and shelter. When it comes to what to do first, the rule of threes sets the priorities: you can survive roughly 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter (exposure), 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food — so protection from the elements and water come long before food.

Explanation

The rule of threes keeps you from spending your first hours on the wrong thing. Exposure kills fastest, then dehydration; food is a distant last.

Why it matters

People burn precious energy foraging for food while exposure or dehydration is the real threat. The rule of threes puts first things first — shelter and water before food.

Chasing food or a water source far afield while ignoring shelter and the airplane.

Ditching (water landing)

Definition

Ditching is putting the airplane down on water. Get life vests on before touchdown — but never inflate them inside the airplane, because an inflated vest can trap you. Plan the approach with the wind and swell: generally into the wind, and along (parallel to) the swell rather than into its face. Brace for the impact. After it stops, egress with a reference point — underwater and disoriented, a hand on a known exit is what gets you out — then deploy the raft and stay together. If you fly over water, wear the PFD.

Explanation

The two things that kill in a ditching are an inflated vest that pins you inside and disorientation underwater. On before, inflate after, and keep a hand on a known exit.

A ditching is survivable, but the egress is where people are lost — to a vest inflated too early or to disorientation. The technique is what gets everyone out.

Inflating the life vest inside the cabin so it’s ‘ready’ — which can trap you as the airplane fills.

Pre-flight the survival plan

Definition

Survival is preparation. Before you fly, know where the ELT, the fire extinguisher, and the survival/first-aid gear are — and that they work — because the day you need them you won’t have time to find out. And when you’re down, run the sequence: secure the airplane, out and away, account, treat, signal, survive (shelter, water), and stay put to get found. The equipment only helps if it’s aboard, current, and reachable.

Explanation

Every tool in this lesson is useless if it’s expired, buried in the baggage, or left at home. The preflight is where survival actually happens.
